Deer gone wild

1/19/2012

Well, we finally have some winter weather settling in. No fishing to report as I am taking this opportunity to put the jet boat in dry dock and give her the annual once over.  Time to strip her down, scrub all of the fish slime out of the bilge, and put on a new coat of fresh paint and some varnish.  I will be out of commission for a week or so.

Luke showed me an crazy youtube video that is the perfect example of why you don't ever mess with momma! The deer hunters among us will never look at a deer in the same way.  Keep your kids and pets indoors where they're safe!

Kris and I had a chance to get for a couple of hours today and enjoy some more of this spring weather in January.  Same old story- still good numbers of steelhead ready to come out and play.   While I do love winter, and playing in the snow, I could sure get used to this mild weather and great fishing.  More nice weather forcasted for this weekend, get out and soak it in, winter won't stay away forever.

Boondogle in the sunshine for Steelhead!

Enjoyed a beautiful October --I mean January day on the river with Dave today.  A self professed fair weather fisherman, Dave said that all he wanted  out of today was to be out on this great river in this fantastic weather.  Oh, and he did mention that he would love to catch a fish boondogling floats and spawn.  Well the first part was easy, just had to get the boat to the water.  I was a little unsure of the second wish, what with this still being January and the fish in winter mode.

The weather was superb as advertised, sunny and 40's.  The fishing was excellent also. We caught a number of fine steelhead as the pictures of a few of our fish from today indicate.  However, the icing on the cake was when Dave cried "there's one", much to my surprise, as were floating in between spots.  As is his custom, Dave was casually fishing in between spots.  Now I have to admit, my finger was on the anchor switch, preparing to set up and fish the next run when he hooked the steelhead.  But no lie, that male bit in less than 2 feet of water!   Thanks to Dave's "Puma" like reflexes, and a little luck the day was made.

Still a lot of fish in the system, and they are not going anywhere so fishing should continue to be good.  We should have many opportunities for great fishing as the winter progresses.

See you on the water,
Nathan

El nino or la nina, I don't care what  you call it--it's laaa nice!  This unseasonably warm weather coupled with the lack of snow means good fishing.  Water temps are still in the mid thirties, and the fish that we are catching are acting more like fall fish than typical winter steelhead.  The fights have been outstanding!  Here are a couple of shots from a short venture I took this afternoon.

The biggest story of the day unfortunately was the big one that got away.  One of the largest steelhead that I have seen in a couple of years came unpinned about ten feet from the net.  If I only had someone to  maneauver the boat...... oh what might have been.  Easily upper teens, maybe twenty lbs.  Good news, he's still there and we will meet again.

Obligations have kept me off the water much of the last week, but we should be out quite a bit during this nice stretch of weather.   I have a day maybe two left available during the next week of forecasted nice weather if anyone wants to get out before winter finally gets here.
